3. Quests about fears of hypnosis
Could I get struck in a trance? Can I be hypnotised against my will? Under hypnosis, am I being controlled? Can you make me dance around like a chicken? Will I be asleep or unconscious during hypnosis? Can I be made to do embarrassing things like you see on TV shows? Will I be totally under your control? Can you make me do things against my will? I have seen stage hypnosis shows, will I be programmed to do things I don't want to?
If you want to be hypnotised then you can be. It is commonly stated that 'all hypnosis is self hypnosis', meaning that it is an entirely voluntary state.
If you do wish to be hypnotised it is important that you don't try and do anything, rather that you just let yourself feel how you naturally want to.
Hypnotherapy can assist you in all areas of your life.
As well as providing outstanding relaxation and stress relief, hypnotherapy can help your mind function at a higher level by providing suitable images and metaphors to help you overcome your problems and achieve your goals.
What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis refers to the actual state you will enter. Hypnotherapy refers to the work done by the therapist to help you overcome your issues and fulfil your aims and ambitions.
Hypnotherapy is for absolutely anybody of sound mind.
What kind of problems do you treat?
For examples of the kind of problems treated please see the Hypnotherapy Explanation Page.
However, it is worth noting that there is an aspect of nearly every problem or issue which can be helped by hypnotherapy, even if it is being used as a complementary therapy.
Can hypnosis help me lose weight or give up smoking?
Definitely. Many people have lost weight and given up smoking with hypnosis. We can definitely help you with this.
What does it feel like to be hypnotised?
Everyone's experience is different.
However in general, most people find it extraordinarily relaxing and pleasurable. Often clients experience hypnotic phenomenon such as time distortion, slight anaesthesia, etc.
Can I carry on taking medication whilst having hypnotherapy treatments?
We would never recommend that you reduce or stop taking your medication. If you did wish to reduce or stop any of your medication, it should be done in close consultation with your doctor.
If they wish to be then yes.
Our sessions cost £40 each and last for an hour. For some issues a single session is sufficient, for others a course of about 6-10 sessions would be appropriate.
These kind of details can be discussed over the phone prior to your visit, or they can be discussed at the time of your first appointment.
What a typical Session entails?
To some extent it depends on what you want it to consist of, but in general a session works best if some time is given over to speaking about various issues and some time to the actual hypnotherapy.
This way the hypnotherapy can be more targeted. A 50:50 split works well.
How many sessions would I need?
It is best if we discuss this issue towards the end of your first session when you have had some experience of meeting us and of how we work. Together, we can look at how many sessions you feel it will take for you to change or improve the issues you are working on.
For some issues, a single session is sufficient. For others 6-10 sessions is a more appropriate number.
It will be your choice however, exactly how many you wish to come for.
What can I expect when I make an appointment?
We find it is best to split the time 50:50 between speaking and discussing your issues, and actual hypnotherapy.
If you do not wish, you do not need to speak about any of your issues and the time can be used differently.
However, exploring issues verbally is also very therapeutic and makes an excellent combination with hypnotherapy.
My problem is quite personal and I don't want to give away too many secrets?
This is fine. Your problems can be address very indirectly and discreetly, and you need not say anything particular about your issues.
However you should know that anything discussed or mentioned is in complete confidence.
We are professional therapists and subscribe to professional codes of ethics covering client confidentiality.
No, you will remain alert and conscious, and retain the capacity to look after yourself physically & mentally at all times.
Further you will be able to accept only those ideas you wish to.
Also, let us assure you that we are fully trained and qualified in the
use of hypnosis.
There is no way you can get stuck in a trance. However, it might feel so comfortable & relaxing that part of you wishes you could remain there a little longer - just like all good things! However you can leave the state whenever you want to.
You will be pleased to know that there are no side effects from hypnotherapy.
Absolutely not. A famous hypnotherapist & teacher often stated that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. By this he meant that it is always a voluntary state and not something that can be forced upon us.
Under hypnosis, am I being controlled?
Absolutely not. You will choose yourself exactly what you think and feel throughout the session. You cannot be made to do anything you don't want to do.
Only if you really want to! Stage hypnosis shows cause a lot of problems for clinical hypnotherapy, because the two might at first seem connected. However, they are not.
Participants in stage hypnosis shows are basically extroverts enjoying an audience. The shows do not work without an audience.
In the world of clinical hypnosis, setting up such situations is generally not considered ethical.
Neither, rather you can think of a hypnotic trance as having the relaxation of a good sleep with the mental alertness of being fully awake.
No. As explained above for those sort of shows an audience is needed. Without them the participants do not act in an outrageous way. The participants are hand picked by the hypnotist for their extroversion and sense of wanting to make fun of themselves in front of others.
You can feel completely assured that you will remain under your own control at all times - physically & mentally. If at any time you wanted to end the session, then you would be perfectly able to.
Can you make me do things against my will?
Absolutely not. During the state of hypnosis you will retain a sense of what you want to do and what you don't want to do.
This also applies to any ideas that are being suggested to you. If for some reason you didn't agree with anything, then you would just be able to ignore them. Further more, if you wished you could just end the session.
As described above, the participants in a stage hypnosis show are actually doing exactly what they want.
They very extrovert fun loving people who love to have a laugh at themselves, and are skillfully picked out from the audience by the stage hypnotist.
